In honor of National Burrito Day on April 1, we’ve rounded up the top 10 burrito-ordering cities in the country. Does your town make the list?
Is there any food more perfect than a burrito? This versatile, portable, and oh-so-delicious creation works for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can stuff it with eggs and bacon, chicken or beef, vegetables, and—of course—beans … black beans, red beans, whole beans, refried beans. All the beans. It’s no wonder that the burrito has earned its own National Burrito Day, the first Thursday in April.
Beloved across borders and from coast to coast, the burrito has inspired cult-like adoration. While the burrito originally established its American foothold in Southern California back in the 1940s, discerning diners all across the nation have fully embraced this fun-to-eat meal option. Our data shows that the top two metro areas in love with the burrito are Phoenix and LA, but don’t let that fool you into thinking burrito territory exists only in the west. Hardly. Also included on our list of top ten burrito-loving cities are Atlanta, Washington DC, Dallas, Denver, Chicago, Oakland, Boston, and Tampa. Clearly, the burrito has conquered the whole country.
The word “burrito” is a diminutive form of burro or donkey. Burrito historians theorize that the tortilla-wrapped delight might have been so named to reflect its role as a kind of sidekick to the horses ridden by Mexican cowboys or vaqueros. The story goes that because burritos could be easily packed into the cowboys’ saddle bags for travel, they were compared to the donkeys that often accompanied horses on the trail. There are other theories, including one about a 1940s street vendor who called the school kids he served “burritos,” meaning that they were dim-witted. We prefer the story about the cowboys.
Wherever the name came from, the burrito really took off in the 1950s and never looked back. From the early days of fairly basic (and, by today’s standards, “skinny”) options to the more contemporary, overstuffed behemoths, the burrito has found its way into our hearts.
And as we continue to cope with life in the time of COVID, the burrito offers the additional benefit of being a meal option that’s made for individual serving. National Burrito Day would be the perfect time for some crowd-pleasing burrito catering delivered right to your office. Whether you have a breakfast meeting, a client lunch, or a late-night working session with the team, the burrito is the perfect choice. Individually packaged burrito boxed lunches offer variety with chicken, steak, pork, and veggie options. You can also go the “deconstructed” route with a burrito bowl.
We wanted to know which parts of the country love burritos the best, so we looked at ezCater burrito orders for the past year.
