When Wendy Situ started her internship with ezCater five years ago, the college junior was struggling to find out who she was meant to be. Her experience is not uncommon among millennials, Washington Post reports. “They are following their friends on social media and have this out-of-proportion sense that everyone else has figured it out and is getting jobs,” Colorado psychologist Sheryl Ziegler offered in the article. “They have a sense that everyone has it together but them.”

When Wendy completed her first internship with us at ezCater, she was just figuring out her direction and could not have seen what was coming to her. She started a second internship the following summer, and when that ended she returned home. But those plum internships with ezCater made all the difference in the trajectory of her career.

Wendy’s coworkers found her incredibly resourceful, and the former intern lucked out to an enviable degree. She was hired as a sales support specialist, building automation for ezCater during a rich and germinative time. Her desk is no more than a three-minute walk to the shopping hub of Boston’s Downtown Crossing, and her workspace overlooks a dazzling panorama of the city. Plus, working at ezCater has given her a renewed sense of purpose and alignment. She says she finally knows “what it means to be an adult with a job I enjoy.”

Recently our company acknowledged Wendy’s dedication with the Rosanna Rockstar Award, an offshoot of ezCater’s company “recipe” for excellent workplace culture. The recipe comprises of nine tenets including “move fast & break things,” “no assholes,” and “grow fast and eat cupcakes.” Essential to this recipe is the belief that companies flourish when its employees create a community and codes of honor and work ethic.

In the past year, Wendy has been awarded nearly a dozen “cupcakes” by her teammates, who cite her for being “insanely helpful,” and for “owning it” and “aiming high.” This is why Wendy, in addition to earning the Rosanna Rockstar title, will also receive $1,000 to put toward her personal or professional development.

Early this week, in one of the sun-streaked offices of ezCater, we chatted with Wendy about working at ezCater.

 

Why did you choose to work at ezCater?

I actually interned for ezCater for two summers in a row while I was in college, so this is technically my third time back at the company. When I first started working at ezCater in 2013, we were over on Bromfield Street so it’s insane to see where ezCater is today. I didn’t plan on coming back to ezCater for the second or third time but during that time, I was unsure of what to do with myself or where I was heading in my career. I was fortunate enough that I had a good relationship with ezCater, and they welcomed me back.

What does your typical day look like at ezCater?

It varies quite a bit but usually includes troubleshooting HubSpot fires and working on a variety of projects for different teams. This includes building automation to make things more efficient and ensuring that we’re obtaining important data along the way.

What most excites you about working at ezCater?

Working at ezCater, every day looks different. I like being able to work on a variety of projects and use what I know while learning new things along the way. The best part is when something I build works, saving people time and energy. My goal is to make sure things continue to run smoothly for the teams I support. Automation can’t always be perfect, but it’s valuable when we’re able to make a positive difference in people’s daily process and help them become more productive.

What have you learned at ezCater?

I learned so much during my time here. I’m lucky I get to work with a few different teams, so I get to see the nitty-gritty details of how the departments operate and the results they produce. I’ve learned the ins and outs of HubSpot and other programs we use for automation. But the most important thing I learned is what it means to be an adult with a job I enjoy.

What advice do you have for someone who wants your career?

Always ask questions—it never hurts to ask for clarification. Be comfortable with trial and error—if things don’t work out the way you’d imagined, try a bunch of different things until you find the best course of action. No one at ezCater has ever given me a hard time for taking the time to find the best solution.

What do you like about being in Downtown Crossing?

The convenience of having so many options (food, shops) close to the office.

What’s your favorite thing to do in Boston?

My favorite thing to do is dog- or people-watch at the Boston Common when it’s nice out.
