Sometimes you just need a treat. Kitchen Millie—a dessert upstart that has been delivering its two-bite cookies to Boston farmer’s markets and beyond for a year and a half—knows how to come to the rescue. We got in touch with Michelle Wax, the founder of Kitchen Millie, to discuss childhood cookie memories, her background in the tech industry, and the fact that, yes, beer pairs excellently with cookies.
Q: How did you (and/or your restaurant) first get started with catering?
A: We started out super small, just doing farmers markets and pop up events. A lot of people asked us to start catering their weddings and events—they really wanted the cookies there. We started doing more traditional platters and have really expanded the catering options. Along with the more traditional platters, we do make-your-own ice cream cookies. We do milk and cookie pairings, offering different types of milk and cookies to go with it. We do wine and beer pairings, too.
Q: What makes food and the restaurant industry in Boston unique?
A: My background is in tech startups. I worked at LevelUp here in Boston. As I dove into the food industry, I found that every restaurant is so willing to help, to partner together. For our ice cream cookie ‘wich events, for example, I’ve met so many people that we collaborate with.
Q: What’s your favorite dish at your restaurant?
A: My favorite cookie is one of the more simple kinds: The Unrivaled Classic. They’re chocolate chip cookies, just like the ones you had when you were a kid. Our Caramel Renegade (a soft snickerdoodle with salted caramel in the center) does well, too. We also have a gluten-free cookie that’s made with Taza chocolate. The beer and cookie pairing is my favorite thing events-wise.
Q: What do you predict for the future of Boston’s restaurant industry?
A: I think things are going to keep getting more and more unique. So many things you wouldn’t expect are popping up. I think that’s going to expand over many different types of business.
Q: What makes your food unique?
A: We’re really going for the fresh-from-the-oven taste that brings you back to your childhood. We’re not trying to be too weird or too different. Everything we do is either a classic or a twist on a classic. Along with that, we’re doing two-bite cookies. We want to provide a good treat that’s not Frisbee-sized, so you can always enjoy a high-quality cookie.
